11 Apr 2011 - 15 Apr 2012

The Jehangir Nicholson Collection, a testament to the passion of a legendary collector of modern Indian art found residence in a new display gallery within the precincts of the CSMVS. Assembled between 1968 and 2001, the Nicholson Collection comprises nearly 800 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by more than 250 Indian artists.

The inaugural exhibition of the JNAF,  highlighted iconic works produced by some of Mumbai's best known artists, and posed questions about why certain works continue to inhabit public memory.

Works by the Progressive Artist’s group - FN Souza, SH Raza, V Gaitonde, Tyeb Mehta, Husain, Ara were the highlights of the exhibition; while Jitish Kallat, Nalini Malani, and Atul Dodiya‘s paintings gave the exhibition a contemporary feel. Some of these works are important symbols in the discourse on modern Indian art.
