Dr. James Cuno, who currently serves as President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust since 2011, is an accomplished leader in the field of the visual arts. He is a prolific author and lecturer on museums and cultural policy and travels across the world to share his thoughts and experience, his most recent work being Museums Matter: In Praise of the Encyclopedic Museum.

In the modern era, museums have been seen as integral to cultural and even national identity. This lecture explored the sources and implications of identity politics, cultural heritage, and modern museums, and the manipulation of the latter in pursuit of the former.

Dr. James Cuno

Dr. James Cuno is an American historian and curator who currently serves as President and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust since 2011. He is the former Director of the Harvard Art Museums (1991–2002), the Courtauld Institute (2003–04), and the Art Institute of Chicago (2004–2011).

He received his Ph.D. in Art History from Harvard University. He is a prolific author and lecturer on museums and cultural policy and travels across the world to share his thoughts and experience, his most recent work being Museums Matter: In Praise of the Encyclopedic Museum and Whose Culture? The Promise of Museums and the Debate over Antiquities in 2012.
