Dinesh Barap is a resident of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Mumbai, belonging to the Warli community.
Warli art, rich in nature and narrative, visually tells stories across generations. Barap learnt the craft from his grandmother. He learned how Warli art is intertwined with nature, depicting elements like mountains, the moon, the sun, and rivers.
Barap was part-contributor on the research project “Negotiating the Grid—poverty, gender, and access to services in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka” with the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and Environmental Studies & Pani Haq Samiti. The 24 ft work was commissioned by the JNAF and featured in JNAF’s exhibition, ‘A Forest in the City: Living within Sanjay Gandhi National Park & Aarey Colony.’
Barap currently lives, teaches and hosts workshops on Warli art at SGNP.
