“Photography is fiction in the guise of non-fiction”
- Dayanita Singh
Singh reminds us that all photographs are mediated, whether fiction or documentary. In ‘Photo Lies,’ she turns up the inherent ‘deception’ in photography into a tool of image-making through montage, multiplicity and scale. The exhibition is presented at the JNAF gallery and extends as interventions into the Textile gallery and the Natural History gallery within the CSMVS Museum.
‘Photo Lies’ at the JNAF presents works from 2019 - 2024 that will be shown in India for the first time. The show draws from Singh’s recent international survey exhibition ‘Dancing with my Camera,’ as well as some works specially created for this edition.
Dayanita Singh (b. 1961, New Delhi) is an artist who has pioneered a genre-defying approach to photography, one that pushes the limits of the medium and the boundaries of how we experience images. Singh frees the photograph from the wall and the book from the bookshelf to create her own unique forms of exhibition and dissemination.
