JEHANGIR NICHOLSON ART FOUNDATION

A collaborative exhibition of paintings from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation was held at the Premchand Roychand Gallery and was inaugurated by abstractionist Laxman Shreshtha.
The exhibition displayed paintings exposing the Pravaha or the flow of the ‘Bombay School’ which originated in the late 1870s till 1950s. The Bombay school took birth at the Sir J. J. School of Art and went onto taking a number of turns from the European academic style, the en plein air landscape painting bearing the influence of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, the Bombay Revivalism and the dynamic style of the Bombay Progressive Group itself. This exhibition comprised rare works from the CSMVS collection of Pestonjee Bomanjee, Rustom Siodia, Abalal Rahiman, M. V. Dhurandar, L. N. Taskar, M. R. Parandekar, G. H. Nagarkar, Gladstone Solomon, Walter Langhammer. There were 18 works by renowned Progressive Modern Masters like M. F. Hussain, Hebbar, Ara, Souza, Tyeb Mehta, N S Bendre, Bal Chhabda, V S Gaitonde, Sadanand Bakre, Akbar Padamsee, Jehangir Sabavala from the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation. The highlight of the exhibit was the ‘Portrait of a Woman’ by Souza made in 1960 and Tyeb Mehta’s ‘Falling Figure’ made in 1965.
