JEHANGIR NICHOLSON ART FOUNDATION
Sunita Shreshtha was born in 1940. She graduated in Fine Arts from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai; where she met her husband, acclaimed abstractist Laxman Shreshtha. She was his junior and they have been together for more than five decades now. Like her husband, she is also a non-representational painter. She chose to pursue her art largely in private; hence, her paintings have rarely been exhibited.
Sunita’s works were displayed most recently in ‘Voicing a Presence: Women Artists in the Jehangir Nicholson Collection’ at The Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation, CSMVS, Mumbai in 2013 curated by Ranjit Hoskote who writes, “Shreshtha’s art like that of many of the abstractionists of her generation, who began to work during the 1960’s is imprinted with the examples of Barnett Newman and Adolph Gottlieb. It is also inspired by the pedagogy, specifically the colour theory of the German American artist and teacher Josef Albers. In Shreshtha’s paintings for instance we see a powerful resonance of Albers’ seemingly infinite series of paintings and graphic works, ‘Homage to the Square’”.
Sunita continues to paint for atleast three hours a day. She lives and works in Mumbai.
