Bimal Kundu

Bimal Kundu was born in Calcutta in 1954. He graduated from Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta in Painting and Sculpture.

His sculptures are characteristically simplistic, however tell a story upon closer inspection. His work is inspired and influenced by semi-realistic cubism. Kundu is always searching for new mediums, and has successfully translated leather, wood, bronze, stone, and fiberglass into individual modern pieces. His most significant work is ‘Bird’, an eight-foot sculpture constructed with aluminium, at Calcutta airport. Among Kundu’s other consequential works, are a fourteen-foot sculpture ‘Birpurush’ at Nicco Park and a ten-foot concrete sculpture ‘Kolkata’ at V.I.P. Road in Calcutta.

Kundu has been a member of the Society of Contemporary Artists since 1989 and is also a member of the West Bengal State Charukala Parishad. He is active in the Society of Contemporary Art. Aside from receiving the Rajaram Scholarship from Government of Karnataka and Governor’s Memorial Medal, H.C. Ghosh Award, Navonmeshika Award, he also won the National Award in 2000. 

Kundu has participated in many group shows including at the CIMA Gallery, Calcutta; Aakriti Art Gallery, Calcutta; Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; Cymroza Art Gallery, Bombay; and Gallery Sumukha, Bengaluru. His works are part of many public and private collections in India such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Birla Academy; and Venkatappa Art Gallery, Karnataka.

Kundu lives and works in Calcutta.

Works
