Workshop with BMC School students from Teach for India conducted by Kumkum Somani
Kumkum Somani, the author of a children’s book 'Gandhijis Gems' based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, began by introducing Gandhi as a symbol in popular visual culture and imagery. The children were led on a curated walkthrough the exhibition ‘Kanu’s Gandhi’, unfolding details of the last 10 years of Mahatma’s life that related to the photographs on display: Sevagram Ashram, travels through India, his relationship with leaders like Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, Rabindranath Tagore, his relationship with Kasturba, movements like Swadeshi, Khadi Pratishthan, the Dandi March, Gandhiji’s assassination. The focal point of the workshop was that the children used these narratives to illustrate story their own ideas.
