Hassan Gayoor

Hassan Gayoor was born in Dalgate Srinagar in 1939, Gayoor did his Bachelors in Fine Arts (Sculpture) from M.S. University of Baroda in 1970. Later, he taught at the Institute of Music & Fine Arts, Srinagar before he was elevated as its principal. He also served as Dean Faculty of Music & Fine Arts, University of Kashmir from 1990-98.

Gayoor pioneered Kashmir Artist’s Guild in 1971 and contemporary sculpture movement in Kashmir. He was not only an artist, but a sculptor and principal too. He participated in various national & international art exhibitions since 1962. His works were displayed at Lalit Kala Galleries, Shridharani Art Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam, Ashoka Art Gallery, New Delhi, Jehangir Art Gallery and Taj Art Gallery, Mumbai.

Gayoor received numerous awards from Jammu & Kashmir Cultural Academy and from other state academies including senior Fellowship Department of Culture HRD Govt. of India and was honoured “ Veteran Artist of India” by AIFACS, New Delhi in 2003.

During his eventful career he was also awarded Sadiq Memorial Award and Citation for Life Time Achievement in Fine Arts and he also won first prize in All India Creative Calligraphy competition.

Gayoor passed away in 2013.
